What is reconstructive plastic surgery?

It is performed to correct functional impairments caused by burns; traumatic injuries, such as facial bone fractures and breaks; congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palates or cleft lips; developmental abnormalities; infection and disease and cancer or tumours. As the term Reconstructive Surgery covers a broad spectrum of procedures, it is thus difficult to generalise. The procedure can range from a simpler skin reconstruction on a less visible area to a more complex detailed procedure of facial reconstruction.

Advantages of Reconstructive Surgery

The main advantage is that the surgery will correct physical defects, giving patients a more desired appearance, which effects their self-esteem and emotional well-being.

Disadvantages of Reconstructive Surgery

The main disadvantage of Reconstructive Surgery is the costs involved and these costs may not be within the budget of many patients. There are certain Reconstructive Surgeries that may be partially covered by insurance, especially if the defects are visible. When deciding whether to get a Reconstructive Surgery, the patient has to consider all the benefits, risks and disadvantages to make an informed decision. It helps to talk to an experienced plastic surgeon that can help the patient decide.
